Neolib, re:

I think we'll leave only when the American public gets tired of the deception, and that will be when more of us begin to FEEL the losses of health, life and loved ones that is occurring in Iraq. [Ed]

I think we will leave when Bush deems it in his interest to leave. What I don't know is which of the two will come first. [Neolib]

My statement assumes that the American public will refuse to support the continuance of the fiasco in Iraq long before Bush will acknowledge that his dad was right and he was terribly, fatally wrong. I think when that the public finally sees that we must leave the conservative rats in both houses of Congress will desert the sinking ship to save themselves and force a change in policy. The real question will be whether the first rats off the ship are from the right or the left. I would guess from the right.

The only salvation for Bush would be to, as Mike sometimes asserts, declare victory and pull out after the Iraqi elections, abandon his secret ambitions for the resouces and politics of the region and blame the Iraqis for all of the harm that befalls them after we pull out. But I don't think that the people who believe in miracle will allow themselves to "lose faith," and make the best bad choice of the few remaining bad choices available.

And yes, it will be defining moment for the Bush Administration and one that will be studied for lessons learned for decades to come. That's as it should be. Ed
