It's a stream that runs underground but close to surface, usually down a mountain, or what we call a mountain here, or hillside, and at the low end has an outlet. Once the ground is saturated, it starts to flow out. Some run all the time, but wet weather ones need a lot of rain. There was a steady one in the holler that my grandparents used for water. They dug and rocked a catch hole and used it for their house water instead of a well. It came down the hill underground and flowed out just behind the house.
