Gosh, if this is Utopia, I'd hate to see what the opposite is like.

Thank you for being such a wonderful mouthpiece for, what, exactly?

You are the "cup is half full" sort. I'm the "cup is probably just a hustle and a convenient racket for the rich" sort.

Not to demolish your argument in ten words or less, but let's examine reality, shall we?

Re: They have also got a higher standard of living than ever before.

I don't know which "they" you might be referring to kimosabe, but here in the U.S., the highest standard of living for the nation was achieve in 1973 and it has been declining ever since, except for a tiny handful of rapacious corporate thieves who are managing to create a dystopia of human misery and indentured servitude while they create an island of ruthless prosperity for a tiny handful of generally corrupt individuals.

*** Re: The standard of living now compared with then is amazing.

Since 1904, approximate 96% of the commercial stocks of seafood have been seemingly permanently depleted. If this is progress to you, I'd be interested to know what you think depletion is all about.

Let's look at life for a moment from the perspective of the Maori, the Sioux, the Cheyenne, the Palestinians (granted that they overcome genocide by massive breeding), the Armenians circa WW I, the Tutsis, the Aborigines, the Caribs, the blue fin tuna, the swordfish and the so-called orange roughy.

In unison, they all ask you, Maurice: "Do turkeys enjoy Thanksgiving?"

Re: One invention now earns vast amounts because each invention benefits millions instead of thousands.

VIOXX, silicon breast implants, asbestos spray fireproofings, and the Osbourne computer come to mind here.

Re: The "torture" in "enemy combatant" prisons pales compared with the cruelty meted out in the bad old days.

Such moral relativism was used as a defense by the vicious butchers who were hanged at Nuremberg. What's your excuse?
