The problem was that the Brazilian real was devalued so their exports became relatively more expensive than Brazil's and their economy went into a 3 year slide. A sliding currency has pain but so does one that is too strong. A strong currency exposes all and any inefficiencies in an economy, remember what the ever rising dollar did to us back in 2001? I read one earnings report after another citing losses due to exchange rates.
