You are right - it has not happened in the past and probably not going to happen in future either. However if a government - any government is squeezed really tight - they might be prone to populist measures. Here is a scenario I lay out for you - Saudi Arabian citizens buy all available real estate in Manhattan, LA and DC assuming their currency can buy a lot against our superly devalued dollar. Further assume we go into war with Saudi's for their active role in supporting terrorists who happen to inflict harm much larger than 9-11 tragedy.

What do you suppose will happen to the real estate of the Saudi Citizens - especially if the US also happens to be in depression ?
