You are definitely on to something with that line of thought. There is no doubt as I look back on my life that there is a very deliberate propaganda effort by American elites to continue this image of America kicking ass in the world, and to implement it by going out and actually kicking ass. This sort of propaganda serves so many useful purposes for the elites: a diversion from domestic matters, keeps the profits rolling into the military/idustrial coffers, lets everyone else in the world know who is in charge/prevents challenges to U.S. dominance, keeps the population of the U.S. under control by getting them focused on foreign affairs, etc.

George Bush, Sr. is perceived as a wimp? No problem, send the Marines into Panama to rout a two bit dictator, and watch Bush's image and ratings soar! Cold War over, no problem, build up Saddam Huessein, then look the other way as he threatens Kuwaitt with attack, new enemy created, military budgets protected! A challenge to U.S. dominance in Europe, no problem, attack the one who has stepped out of line in Serbia and reassert American control over the region. Then, just as we had some semblence of peace in the world, 9/11 comes along and ensures a whole new prolonged war, massive increases in military expenditures, U.S. penetration into important oil producing regions of the world.

Ah! The U.S. has created the perfect Orwellian state and 9/11 and the aftermath is a clear reflection of this brave new world.
