I look at gold differently than you because as it is quoted in $US, it turns out that the increase in gold price has not transfered into meaningful gains in Canada. If you hold gold that you bought in $CAN, gold has actually depreciated by a few dollars/ounce this year. This is due to the unprecedented increase in the $CAN in relation to the $US.

Gold has cyanide problems, Nickel has arsenic problems, certain oil shales release benzenes, komatiite has asbestos, they all got problems.

One very interesting thing about gold is the promotion of the Islamic gold dinar which could certainly drive the price up.
