Well, it turns out that I did turn off change-tracking on search tables for prior years. Beats me why the server is rebuilding those catalogs right now. And further beats me why the item count in the catalogs is decreasing. And I'm getting frequent lockups in the management console. I've fixed the current-year search insertion routine and as soon as the system will let me, I'll have it repopulate the current year's search catalog.
