Well, it turns out that I *did* turn off change-tracking on search tables for prior years. Beats me why the server is rebuilding those catalogs right now. And further beats me why the item count in the catalogs is *decreasing*. And I'm getting frequent lockups in the management console.

I've fixed the current-year search insertion routine and as soon as the system will let me, I'll have it repopulate the current year's search catalog.

The database shrink makes sense. The error in preview just happened again. (But not on this post, it is short, and other was long, requiring more CPU cycles, this increasing latency.) Will not worry for now. Thanks for the information. Your site is a great place.
