I would expect a deer to bolt (usually). But if he's familiar with the area maybe you didn't get close enough for him to feel threatened. So its hard to say it wasn't normal BUT I guess *I* would have expected him to run

Maybe he wants to become a sausage? :-)

A few questions in order here.

Do you have a manger display in the yard, with other animals? Sheep, for instance?

Or, do you have any artificial reindeer in the yard this time of year? The little wicker ones that light up and their heads move?

If so, maybe he was seeking company.
