The idea of "God" started as an imagined UNKNOWN as a cause of something. For millions of years almost EVERYTHING in the natural world was UNKNOWN. Farting was caused by a spirit, the wind was a spirit. Spirits lived in water, in trees, inside and behind things. Life was movement. If something moved it was alive. Some things were weak and some were strong. The Sun was the most powerful living "God". The Thunder and lightning "Storm" Gods were also very powerful.

When people do not know what moves something or creates something they must invent an answer. We have imagined millions of answers and have then corrected them when we discovered answers in the real world. Thunder is no longer a huge creature in the sky shouting his anger in a huge terrifying voice.

We still have many answers. Much is unknown. We still imagine answers to things unknown. It is the subtlety of our imagination that determines whether or not we can participate in a rational and civilized world...
