That is an excellent idea. As my essential nature is lazy, so this will make gift shopping much easier.

I just heard on the local news how Walmart busted some bad guys using phony/stolen gift cards.

favorite gift I get every year is from my in-laws; it is a gift card. Some have thought this to be crass -- like not really buying someone a gift -- but I think it is great.

I recall last year X-mas sales were somewhat slower then expected but gift card sales were up huge % as X-mas present. It led to good few weeks for the retailers in January. Retailers only book gift card sales after the money is actually used.
My guess is that proliferation of plastic gift cards has made them so desirable. Usually you buy a gift card for a larger $$ amount than you would buy a real gift.
