To: Sidney Reilly who wrote (68818 ) 12/11/2004 9:44:58 AM From: Crimson Ghost Respond to of 89467 I Fear America Waited Too Long in the Middle East By Sam Hamod Al-Jazeerah, December 11, 2004 I have a fear that America waited too long to help peace in the Middle East. Unfortunately, and most of my former colleagues at the State Department and other experts in the world, have said for many decades that American foreign policy in the Middle East has been, and continues to be, skewed too heavily in favor of Israel. What was required but never fulfilled was an even-handed, honest broker approach to the Palestine/Israel conflict. President Carter was the last president who tried to do that; unfortunately, after he left office, no one else ever picked up the mantle nor even tried to. Now, with the invasion of Iraq and the destruction of its major cities, and the ongoing brutality of Ariel Sharon and the implementation of his infamous “wall”, I fear things have gone so far out of hand that there may be no solution, but only continued suffering in the Middle East—in Palestine, among peace activist Jews in Israel and in Iraq. I am positive about two sad things: 1. Iraqis will never allow America to stay in Iraq. Though America has done more damage the Mongols of Hulagu when they burned Baghdad—at least the Mongols did not burn and destroy the rest of the major cities of Iraq (Mosul, Samarra and others). 2. Palestinians will never rest but will now begin attacking more Israeli sites around the world until a just peace is achieved. Israel “helping” Palestine run its election does nothing more than make clear that whoever wins will be a vassal of Israel and America (both of whom were happy when Arafat died, or was poisoned, or whatever). The loss of Arafat means there cannot be a unified Palestine, which is something that America and Israel both hoped for during the Bush administration. This shows their short-sightedness and lack of cultural understanding. America and Israel must both understand that PALESTINE is as much a spiritual place that people will defend unto their death as it is a physical place, just as Israel was to Jews; thus, it will not be conquered and it will not die, just as a free Iraq run by Iraqis will not die (regardless of how many troops America sends in, nor how many puppet governments America sets up). I fear that there will be more bloodshed, and all of it will be for naught. More American servicepeople, more Iraqis, more Palestinians and more Israelis will die in these major onging conflicts, that most Arabs and Muslims in the world now see as ONE CONFLICT, NOT SEPARATE CONFLICTS (and you may as well see that Afghanistan is part of this same fabric—and it too will never be conquered by America or anyone else so long as there is an Afghan alive). MARK MY WORDS, THIS IS HOW IT IS. I know that many do not want to hear this, but we must face reality. Add to this equation that Conde Rice is on a first name basis and friendly with many of the Israeli hawks in the Likud party and President GW Bush is close to and an admirer of Ariel Sharon, that Bush is also determined to control Iraq, and you can see how it will come to no good. Again, and let me repeat this for effect, the Palestinians, Iraqis, Afghans and other Muslims and Arabs will never allow Israel or the American forces to occupy their lands and people.
