Yes, without the off-topic threads we'd have no sense of community, which I was quoted a long time ago (in the BBS days) as saying is simply the most important aspect that makes a BBS or message-board successful. Plus, they prevent dilution of the content of on-topic boards. Keeps the signal/noise ratio high on the market boards.

iHub programmatically forces the issue regarding use of non-market threads. If you're not a paying member, you're not posting to them. Period.

As I'm constantly reminded, SI users and iHub users are dramatically different creatures. Because of this, there is even less "cannibalism" between the two sites than I thought there might be prior to the acquisition.

On a typical weekday on SI, free member current contribute about 110 messages on market-related boards and 2-3 on non-market ones.

Currently, no programmatic intervention needed. The new folks arriving at the site are almost exclusively interested in the market.
