Bill Biggart,

Re: And even more amazing when one considers the price he paid to take those pictures.

I doubt I would have been as willing to seek out so much danger. In the aftermath of the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake in San Francisco, I traveled down to the Marina District about 8 blocks from my home with a friend who had a small hotel that was essentially undamaged in lower Nob Hill. What we were attempting to do was to contact the disaster relief "first responders" or local residents who'd had their homes damaged or destroyed. We were trying to be good Samaritans and provide people with a place to sleep for a few nights. What we were met with was chaos, hostility and incredulity. It was quite stunning to me that a bona fide offer, albeit not through official channels, was not really even considered.

We left the area as it was still in flames and just scratched our heads about human nature in city environments.
