A better defense would have been to say it was all in jest, but then my response allowed for that and addressed the sentiments expressed generally, rather than personally. Perhaps I forgot to put "*" before and after one use of "your". ;-)

I can't deny I hope you red staters turn on each other-
however that has absolutely nothing to do with what I wish for the country.

So my wishes are probably not as clear as I could have hoped they would be.
