That horse in particular would have been a national champion without any cosmetic alteration. They also crop or shave down horse ears to make them look more petite. When we used to break a lot of colts I would give them a couple of cc's of Ace/Promazine(sp?) to take the edge off. This way by the time the colt is saddled up and ridden for the first time it is cool and relaxed and by the time the drug is wearing off it has mentally accepted everything without a lot of fuss and bother. I made the mistake of giving 7+ cc to a particularly cantankerous filly without reading the precaution sheet and she reacted like she drank 50 gallons of really strong coffee.
