I don't see this divide.

I didn't mean to suggest that there was no middle, only that the two cultures I mentioned were so utterly different as to be unfathomable to each other. The way I defined the two groups, they obviously are not a complete set. I did not address people of other religions, Christians who are less orthodox, and Christians in name only. The "middle" is not a player because the middle is a comfortable mix of secular and religious that probably considers the fuss much ado about nothing and/or dislikes the more strident aspects of both of the groups I mentioned.

Jesus Christ (whether he existed or not) has had a tremendous impact on civilization. Why not at least acknowledge that? What harm could that do?

How could there be harm in recognizing the obvious? How could anyone even suggest that there could be harm in recognizing the obvious. I don't get it.
