It's a perceptual problem of "brown-colored" glasses. When the world looks like poop (because of the faulty glasses), I don't think reading comprehension even entered the equation. It is as though you'd said you are in bed with the enemy because you don't like the war in Iraq. Reading comprehension is a side effect of the actual disease which is philosophical orientations that are held on emotional and factually incorrect foundations, held as though they are true, but never fact-checked . It's like asking a teen to clean the catbox... When they ask "Why? (does the catbox need to be cleaned)" they aren't looking for a detailed explanation of the excretory functions of cats and the actions of microbes on feline urine, even though the form of the question would suggest that they are. They are really saying, "I don't want to clean the f___ing catbox." Simiarly, people who ask "Why don't you want to kill the enemies of America? You are an enemy sympathizer!" aren't looking for looking for a factual accounting of why its not nice to kill Iraqis who are as poor as dirt, had nothing to do with 9/11 and would be the subject of charitable contributions if the world was fair. They are saying "I'm going to get some bastard for killing Americans and raising the price of the fuel for my Hummer! Don't try to stop me." You either make them stop killing the wrong people (force) or you try to calm them and assure them that the bad people will be punished better (and we won't make more enemies) if we stick to the facts.
