Mr Kerik last week withdrew his nomination as the next US Homeland Secretary chief just days after his name had been put forward by US President George W. Bush. It was reported his decision was made due to his hiring of an illegal immigrant as a maid. The new revelations present a major embarassment for President Bush and especially for former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, who pushed for Mr Kerik to be appointed. The first relationship, spanning almost a decade in the 1990s, was with city Correction Officer Jeannette Pinero; the second was with publisher Judith Regan. The revelations about Mr Kerik's private life follow doubts over his suitability to be nominated for homeland security chief. Mr Kerik, 49, married with two children, withdrew in a sudden and unexpected call to the White House on Friday. Mr Kerik said that questions about the immigration status of his family's former nanny and failure to pay taxes prompted his decision to walk away from the job. But speculation has continued that there were deeper and more controversial reasons. On Sunday, the Daily News reported that a six-month investigation showed Mr Kerik had accepted thousands of dollars without proper disclosure, and had ties to a construction company that investigators believe is linked to the mob. Now revelations about his private life also cast a shadow on his suitability for one of the administration's highest-profile cabinet positions. Asked about the affairs and the secret love nest, Joseph Tacopina, Mr Kerik's attorney, said Mr Kerik and Ms Regan had denied the affair in the past.
