Ah, I see it is not a monthly fee. It's a yearly fee, and at $19.95, quite reasonable.

Which makes it even sillier.

On BOTH sides. It's silly for lifers to complain about a $19.95/year fee for full functionality. It's equally silly for management to go to the trouble of creating a special membership level and to unnecessarily create ill feelings.

In my experience, consumers have the highest praise for businesses that live up to their promises without hedging or gotchas, even when it is obvious that they are losing some money in the process.

As an example (speaking of health clubs) I go to a personal trainer who has his own little storefront gym. He has a great policy that instills loyalty - whatever your rate when you first sign-up with him (as long as you continue without interuption), it is your rate for life. He has one client who is paying $15 for each session. Sure, he loses money on this client, but has gained countless clients on his recommendation.
