Joint Family ownership is already happening - However many counties are voting to discourage that. For example in my county they recently passed a law (or whatever you call it) which does not allow for a full fledged kitchen in the basement. You cannot rent out a fully finished walk out basement. The only people who can stay with you are your blood relatives.

So technically you can rent it out to your brother's family but will have to use the same kitchen - in other words truly Joint Family joined to the hip err.. Kitchen.

"Joint Family ownership of homes is no joke- that is what it takes to afford a house these days. The house on the corner across the street from me is home to 3 families (their cars take up the whole street!). My brother in law and his wife rents from my sister in law and her family so they could afford the monthlies."

It's very common here. It started to become very prevalent about three years ago. The feds have recently approved mortgages for new home buyers for two unrelated households.
