I would call "all men are created equal" the foundational idea for the morality of seeking egalitarian goals.

The statement stands alone. It is simple logic. Relating it to the historical time frame of the Revolution is in considering what the word "men" means at the time and for many if not most men at that time it was some subset of men. Whatever concept a man had of who were men, they sought egalitarian goals.

Your comments and analysis in the Civil War era were spot on. The War was about the Constitution, the law. My comments were a digression.

The men of 1776 created the constitution as a set of laws to effect equal political, economic, social, and civil rights for that group. One can make educated guesses as to how they each personally defined men.

As America has evolved, the true meaning of "all men" has become more understood by more and today I believe most Americans. True egalitarianism is simply living and doing unto others what one would have them do unto you.

Today so many still have there own bias, hatred and stupidity that in effect prevents them from implementing equal political, economic, social, and civil rights.
