Emcore Stock Surges on Contract to Sell SunPeak Hundreds of Megawatts Worth of Solar Systems

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) -- Shares of Emcore Corp. surged Thursday after the company reported a contract for hundreds of megawatts worth of solar-power systems for utility-scale projects.

Shares of the fiber-optic and photovoltaic product maker rose $1.13, or 9.2 percent, to $13.46 in morning trading.

Emcore has signed a memorandum of understanding to supply solar systems with between 200 megawatts and 700 megawatts of annual generating capacity to SunPeak Solar. SunPeak will work to secure land and grid access in the Southwest U.S. for the projects throughout 2008. It plans to start construction in early 2009.

The companies did not release financial terms of the agreement, though Emcore said it does not expect any financial benefits from the deal until next year.

Emcore also said revenue is dependent on the renewal of federal investment-tax credits for solar power, which expire at the end of 2008. Though the solar-power industry has been lobbying for an extension, the tax credit was cut from the energy bill signed in December and it's unclear whether it will be included in future legislation.
