CDMA2000 and IS-856 (1xEV-DO)

Frank,

Jim and Cooters addressed your question about 1xEV-DO (IS-856) Revision 0 which is the current data only CDM/TDM hybrid that is being implemented to supplement cdma2000 (1xRTT) Release 0 integrated voice and data at Verizon Wireless, Sprint PCS, ALLTEL, and Bell Canada. One of the features of IS-856 that was not mentioned is hybrid handover that allows 1xEV-DO data service to fall back to 1xRTT data when moving out of acceptable DO signal, even though 1xRTT and 1xEV-DO are transmitted on separate 1.25 MHz carriers.

This presentation by Qualcomm's Dr. Ed Tiedemann who has coordinated Qualcomm's activities in standards bodies since the early nineties outlines cdma2000 and IS-856 evolution and the key features of cdma2000 1x Revision D and the forthcoming HRPD (1xEV-DO) Revision A in this June 2004 presentation:

It should be noted that while 1xEV-DO is standardized under the cdma2000 umbrella as an ITU IMT-2000 3G standard, it is not a part of the cdma2000 standard which currently is at Revision D, and Revision E features are being discussed in 3GPP2, even though commercial implementations are at Release 0 (IS-2000).

Best,
