Liberals have a lot of ideas, and they'd implement ALL of them, at once, if they only could :-) Not all liberal ideas are good ideas- just like all non-conservative right leaning ideas are not good ideas - and these ideas need to be slowed down by the true conservatives. The people you meet who want to see fast change, in a different direction than liberals, but who want to drastically alter society, aren't the kind of conservatives I'm talking about- they aren't real conservatives- they're just like liberals, but simply trying to careen down a different pathway. I think very fast changes to society tend to get out of control- so I value true conservatives. I don't know whether the other types of folks are necessary. They probably are.

"But do we need an anchor to things that do not work?"

What "things" did you have in mind to thrash or keep and build upon? We await your capable-as-only-a-liberal-mind-can-be new-way-look at the issues of the day. Thanks.

Seems to me we need to return to the liberalism that existed before the term was hijacked by a bunch of nincompoops.

This is about a guy who wrote on "Why I am not a conservative".
