In 20 years, one might spend about $12k on terrestrial service, so why not $30k for a phone that goes anywhere? Then again, in 20 years, a Globalstar phone service bill (if the phone was used as much as a terrestrial phone) might exceed $300k...no kidding! And a Globalstar phone doesn't work indoors.

But, on the other hand, if people could only make calls outdoors, it might help address the obesity epidemic by forcing people to leave their workstations to make phone calls.

Also, conscription might help subscription. If the govt deploys more troops to Iraq, it might help increase subscriptions. Given the inelastic demand of deployed troops for phone service, providers might also be able to charge service personnel a higher rate per minute.

Endangered Species ...

"The weight and stand-by times of Globalstar models render them commercially unviable. Consumers don't care if the network can handle four billion subscribers if you can brain a moose with the phone." - TK, 1/20/2001 -
