Europe has not learned elementary negotiating tactics. The first thing to note about negotiation is that your interlocutor is trying to scope how eager you are to come to terms, while concealing his own anxiety. If you betray eagerness, he will increase his demands. If you show a willingness to walk out, come what may, he will moderate his demands. Coming to a political settlement is not necessarily wrong, but appeasement is. Appeasement is an eagerness to make concessions, a show of weakness and intimidation, that merely encourages the other party to seek more, or, if that party does not exploit one, some others who might draw a lesson. Negotiation is preferable to war, but appeasement is never a good idea.

WW2 analogistics have been beaten to death too many times here. My recollection from the election was that it was sort of too hot to handle, since they didn't want to risk pairing W with FDR. So instead, toward the end, W was allegedly like Lincoln. That particular comparison made me nostalgic for the relative rationality of the local analogies.

A reverse analogy that comes to mind: In the runup to W's war, there was a brief story I noticed (and posted here) about Saddam trying (and failing) to smuggle Mig-21 parts out of Serbia for his decrepit air force. Imminent threat, indeed. Analogistically speaking, I'd guess the equivalent WW2 thing would be Hitler smuggling Fokker triplane parts out of Ethiopia, or something.
