>>I think we were all quite happy to buy stuff from the U.S. until recently. In fact, "made in the U.S.A." was kind of a neat thing at one time. I used to work in the auto parts business and boxes often came in with colourful tape with stars and stripes and "Made in the USA" wrapping them shut.<<

I had an opposite experience many years ago while working in a wholesale warehouse. We were getting such shoddy, poorly-packaged goods from US manufacturers that once we had to reject an entire semi-trailer load. Then one day our first shipment arrived from Japan, in extra strength cartons, with smaller boxes inside, and more wrapping inside the boxes. Everything was stamped "Made in Japan", and adorned with cute Japanese characters. The beautiful stuff was 100% flawless, and the customers snapped it up. It just blew me away.

>>I don't care much for this somewhat hostile situation, but I don't know how or when it will be remedied. I suspect there won't be a change until there is a change in government in the U.S.<<

One way out of this is for the Republicans to nominate a more centrist candidate in 2008, like John McCain or Rudy Giuliani. Or for the Democrats to nominate some southern/ western governor with practical experience in actually running something. I dread the thought of another bible-thumper vs. liberal-weenie election.
