>>China makes a ton of profits <<

It all depends on how you define profits. If by profits you mean:

bank loans + revenues - costs

then, yes, China makes profits. Although, judging by some of my purchases lately, even that may not be quite true.

Mq,

<The world is turning into an integrated global economy with specialists everywhere, rising wealth and productivity. >

The world is a big hedge fund where each unit has an 'RFID' that transmits its value in search of arbitrage opportunities.

Mq - Skype is a blast - Good to talk to a BBRist after all this time. I'll trundle out tomorrow for a USB headset.

Uncle Al KBE sending capital/home equity to China in exchange for trade goods reminds me a bit of the "purchase" of Manhattan by the Dutch. We'll send you some baubles - plasma HDTVs that are junk in 5 years - and you send us your capital. In 5 years the toys are gone and you'll have to borrow money back from those who sold them to you. Bernstein's book on gold showed that Spain's Inca gold benefited everyone but the Spanish - plus ca change!
