Big Surf Prompts Kauai Officials To Close Beaches Forecasters Predict Waves Up To 50 Feet High POSTED: 2:57 pm HST December 14, 2004 UPDATED: 4:08 pm HST December 14, 2004 HONOLULU -- Kauai County officials closed the north shore beaches of the Garden Isle Tuesday afternoon because of big surf. Officials reported waves reaching 30 feet. Besides the north shore beaches, officials suspended camping at Blockpot Beach and Haena Beach parks. Forecasters said waves on the north facing shores of most islands could reach 50 feet by Wednesday morning. Forecasters with the National Weather Service said Oahu's North Shore could see giant waves coincide with the high tide just before dawn. Meteorologist Tom Birchard said people who live near the shore should take care, since the high surf could come while it's still dark. A number of residents and business owners along Oahu's North Shore spent Tuesday packing up their outdoor items in case the waves should reach their property. The giant surf is being generated by strong winds northwest of the islands. Birchard said forecasters are comparing the impending waves to a similar swell in 1998.
