All rights reserved many may have been surprised by the vociferousness and amount of energy expended by GFI's management in attempting to fend off HMY's bid. having given the matter some thought, i've come to realize that there is more here than meets the eye. note that HMY's management is comprised largely of Afrikaaners ( i.e., Boere ) and lately, also blacks, whereas GFI's management is a bunch of stiff upper-lip Brits. the Brits simply can't stomach upstart Boere intruding on their turf...they deem them uncouth and rude, and believe they should have stayed on their farms ( Boer actually means 'farmer' ) . of course i'm exaggerating a bit for effect here, to better convey the essence of this conflict. it's as if some unwashed colonial subjects were trying to grab some of her majesty's prized possessions. it's just not done. on top of that, them Boere upstarts are making common cause with RUSSIANS ( i.e. slavic sub-humans... ) - the horror! so that is why GFI's managers didn't think twice about wasting 400 million Rand on a defense that is likely to fail anyhow. : ) Date: Thu Dec 16 2004 10:16 trotsky (frustrated@ABX/BGO) ID#248269: Copyright © 2002 trotsky/Kitco Inc. All rights reserved very much possible. ABX has also the luxury of possessing premium rated paper ( although it is not quite clear WHY that is so ) . ergo it would not suffer undue dilution if it tabled an offer for BGO. however, in BGO's case i wouldn't mind if it remained independent - after all, it may very well be on its way to become a senior producer as well. imo the market still doesn't quite grasp what it is they have found...Kupol is the largest epithermal gold deposit EVER discovered. its cost of production will even beat Goldcorp's Red Lake, and by a significant margin to boot. All rights reserved all the mid tier firms with either A ) a good operation throwing off cash or B ) very exciting exploration prospects or C ) a combination of the above are now takeover targets. this is to say, GLG itself is a target as well...and so is e.g. MDG. the pace of consolidation is quickening...among the senior producers, clearly PDG must be rated a target, on account of the restructuring possibilities and its impressive project pipeline. All rights reserved bwahahaha...we should have known this would happen. why does nobody want WHT? two reasons: 1. distrust of Telfer ( on account of his , ahem, colorful past ) and 2. all that COPPER. copper doesn't command a premium in the stock market - gold however does. if you load up on too much copper, your share price is likely to lose it's gold premium.
