I am a faithful watcher of "West Wing." Yes, I know how liberal it is, but I still find it fun. The show is taking an interesting turn now that a new President must be elected. The Democratic candidate will be Jimmy Smits, and the Republican candidate will be ALAN ALDA! To me, Alda always typified a classical liberal.

Alda is running as an "Eagle" Senator from California, Smits as a moderate congressman from Texas. This means, if the show is renewed for next year, that the new "President" will be the Republican Alan Alda, since Smits doesn't have the "gravitas" to carry the show.

It might work. Alda came across very well in his first appearance.

What made me groan was the reveal that the Republicans could not get 51 votes in the Senate for all of the tort reform Bush wants.

I don't know how important tort reform is. We discussed the subject a bit on this thread a couple of months ago and there were different opinions (for a change). My gut tells me that outrageous settlements are ruining us. But I can find no data on just how serious the problem really is. All these estimates are from models at least as squirrelly and biased as the global warming ones about which you are so outraged. I don't know of any data that we can trust. Plus my federalist streak questions how much of this the federal business. So I'm unpersuaded either way. Hopefully there will be some analysis and clarification of the issues before there's a vote. Fat chance!
