I do not think that it is a religious controversy. It has to do with our understanding of sexual morality, but that is not merely a religious topic. Even someone with a non- religious calculus of values would agree that there have to be guidelines to sexually appropriate behavior, and standards that at least one attempts to meet. For example, it is wrong to hit on minors. It is wrong to be a philanderer, given the breach of trust and unnecessary pain caused. Polygamy is, at least, inadvisable, considering the way it places women in the position of competition for their husband's attention. Etc. Up until recently, few people would have viewed homosexuality as acceptable behavior. In a relatively short period, most now would at least tolerate it. However, there are still issues pertaining to adjusting one's moral outlook to encompass acceptance, and I do not believe we need yet another explosion to politicize sexual mores. Civil union addresses substantive issues, while allowing breathing room for the society to continue to reflect on how it regards homosexuality, and how that fits into consensual sexual morality.
