To a degree, it is racist........back in the 1930s, there was some discussion among the Zionists about the Arab 'problem'. And even now, Israeli Arabs do not have full rights. This is the big problem I see for Israel in the long run. Jewish people have been able to maintain an ethnic identity while lacking a homeland for thousands of years. This clearly left them on the receiving end of bigotry and racism. But the current state of Israel leaves them in the opposite position, at least as viewed by many westerners. That's right. Its not so much the individual treatment of the Arabs but their wholesale denial of Palestinian statehood.....esp. under Sharon. I am convinced that Israel drags its feet on Palestinian statehood for two reasons.....it wants continued access to the water in the huge West Bank aquifer, and does want to give up any part of Jerusalem to the Arabs. What many people don't realize is that there are as many important Muslim buildings and sites in Jerusalem as there are Christian and Judaic. And there does not seem to be an easy solution. For if Israel treats the (1M??) Arabs within it's borders completely equally, there is the very real possibility that 200 years from now, Israel will not be a Jewish state. But ethnic "cleansing" is not a moral option for Jews (at least most I know). So what will happen? I think your time frame may be too long. The Arab birth rate is much higher and more Jews are leaving Israel than arriving due to all the violence. Even if the population were 50/50, Israel's ideals as a Jewish state would have to be compromised. I think Israel would be smart to approve the Palestinian state. I suspect many Israeli Arabs would 'emigrate' to such a state, reducing the Arab population in Israel.
