i have a feeling the gold industry will continue to consolidate whether you like it or not.
so the question is, is this a good thing? i would say yes...since it ultimately leads to more marginal/unprofitable production being closed down quicker ( the ABX/HM merger being a prime example of this ) , plus by creating bigger companies with bigger market caps, more institutions can be enticed to consider the sector for investment.
the industry has always been accused of inefficient use of its capital - the mergers are one way of addressing this.

the spike is probably caused by hedge funds closing the books for the year - i.e. covering some shorts.
pm stock money flows tell me it won't last.
as an aside, the expecation that the dollar will rally is not a contrarian one imo. i've heard dollar rallies predicted for the past 12 months with unwavering regularity. everything from kooky theories about the debt mountain representing a 'synthetic short position' to the more reasonable idea that it looks pretty oversold has been presented - all the way down. the latest theory holds that the multi-decade support at DXY 80 will most definitely hold. and it probably will, for a while. but people generally underestimate the stickiness of currency trends. in the dollar, there are many potential sellers waiting in the wings...praying for a bounce.

What's the big deal about a tiny drop of dioxin? Drink it down like a man and ask for seconds.

We dumped 11 million gallons of this stuff, some on so called enemies, a lot on our own troops.

I bet you if you ask Kissinger or McNamara, they would agree with me. Yes. The Ukranians are wimps.
