Maybe I should just say that it is not a dogmatic matter, even if religious sensibility makes it likelier to oppose gay marriage. Will that be satisfactory? I agree that such changes as you describe in Africa can be mighty disruptive and even cruel. Some of it may be unavoidable, some can be ameliorated, and some can be avoided entirely. I cannot see how to avoid a conflict between Christianity and polygamy if the man joins the church. Some help should have been afforded to the losers, though.
