The average family income for Asian Indians (so termed to differentiate them from American Indians) in 1999 was USD 70,708 against USD 50,046 for all families in the US, as per the figures of the 2000 census. Filipinos, with USD 65,189, are the next highest earning ethnic group. Occupation-wise, 59.9 per cent of Indians were in management, professional and other streams, 7 per cent in service, 21.4 per cent in sales and office, 0.2 per cent in farming and forestry, 2.1 per cent in construction and 9.4 per cent in production, transportation and material moving. The 2000 census showed that the US population was 281.4 million on April 1, 2000. According to the 2000 census, about 1.7 million people reported they were Asian Indian and an additional 0.2 million reported Asian Indian or in combination with one or more races of Asian groups. Considering that about 40,000 Asian Indians immigrate to the US every year, and even accounting for those who return every year, the Asian Indian population in the US is easily two million. The population figures for other immigrants or residents from some of the other countries of South Asia are: 153,533 from Pakistan, 20,145 from Sri Lanka and 7,858 from Nepal.
