Yes. The reaction to it can be quite disorienting. We had an NBA player, almost a decade ago, who used to pray in the locker room during the pledge. He was forced to be present on the court at one point so he would stand with the team but would make a silent prayer for justice in the world during the pledge instead of reciting it out loud. It wasn't a protest, he viewed saluting the flag to be equivalent with worshipping an idol. There was a huge reaction, including some arrests made at the local Mosque of some radio DJ guys who were pulling a stunt. The player ended up leaving the team and the Nuggets haven't had a winning season since.
