kumar, The dictionary shows the definition of "niggardly" to be, 1.not willing to spend,give, or share: cheap - 2.scanty: meager.

It is a perfect word for the experience you mentioned, and has nothing to do with the race of any person. Those that take offense at the word must have a giant chip on their shoulder, are just looking for something to bitch about, or just plain ignorant.

The people who object to the word "niggardly" are, in fact, ignorant. On the other hand, I don't expect everybody to have an excellent vocabulary, so I don't mind adjusting my vocabulary to the audience. Do it all the time. Not too different from adjusting my walking pace so I don't walk ahead of a companion who is frail or elderly or ill or very young.

I call this "compassion."
