Oops. Sorry. the $3.7 trillion is the unfunded amount through 2078. The $10.4 trillion is the unfunded amount through the end of time.

Basically, what actuaries do is determine the NPV based on the termal value of the discount rate.

Either way, the unfunded balance is at least as large as our current national debt. Very scary. So how would you like to pay for that?

If our government doesn't borrow or raise taxes, the other way to get rid of that unfunded obligation is to just declare they don't owe it, but that would leave the younger generation with no retirement.

So you have to ask yourself, what is more immoral? To take care of today's seniors or to screw the younger generation out of their money? Hard choices.
