U.S. back on top in many consumer electronics areas
BOB KEEFE, 12.10.04, 4:00 PM ET

Cox News Service

Until recently, just about every device with a cord or battery under the Christmas tree came from a company based in Japan, China or somewhere else overseas.

But something surprising has happened in many sectors of the consumer electronics business: U.S.-based companies are on top.

Dell Inc. and Hewlett-Packard Co. clearly dominate the personal computer industry. Even IBM Corp.'s sale of its PC business to China's Lenovo Group Ltd. last week (Tuesday) doesn't change that.

Apple Computer Inc.'s revolutionary iPod blasted away Sony Corp.'s Walkman to become the No. 1 portable music device.

PalmOne Inc. and HP dominate the market for personal digital assistants, the little organizers that seem like they should be a quintessential Japanese product.

In other areas, U.S. makers are coming on strong.

RE: "Searching on Google isn't going to change that......"

Then I'm certainly not interesting in wasting time on providing you the information.

First, you could purchase the search feature from Dave & Bob for $19.99 on SI. Second, you could use Google which is free (which you refuse to do). Third, you could check out some of the consumer rags. Fourth, you could ask one of your Asian friends from China. At a minimum, you should spend an hour searching, putting your own time into it.
