Doc, Zantac/Ranitidine..

I'll have to dig for the studies, but it's been around over a decade..it's an H2 blocker, came out after Cimetadine..in Peds we use it all the time as a stomach protectant(esp. the IV formulation because Prilosec doen't come in the IV form)

Prilosec gives you once a day dosing with the obvious benefits..but some clinicians still prefer Ranitidine..Jeff's neuro-onc prescribed it for him when he went on Decadron for ulcer prevention..I also prefer it..I happen to not trust 24hour time release formulations for acid protection..but that's my own opinion..I also like it for acute heart burn(whatever it's related to)..works much faster than Prilosec/tums etc..

PM me and I can talk to you about dosing..

A caution/reminder..be careful in spacing any of these stomach protectants with other medications(esp. Maalox)..generally, they slow the absorption..I suggest taking them one to 1.5 hours before or after other medications..you all may know this but I've met people who don't..

IMO, Prilosec is too expensive (taking advantage of the only once a day approved for OTC) and Zantac does the same for cheaper..

Ranitidine is certainly neither as long-lasting nor as potent as Prilosec at suppressing stomach acid. It's probably adequate to do the job for most folks though, and certainly cheaper.

I think the ASTRONAUT trial tried to answer that question. But those results have been called into question after another group broke out the H. Pylori patients. It may be that h2 blockers are just as good as ppi's unless you have h.pylori.
