<It's always been about the oil.> And continues to be - if it is, then we should say so. My personal feeling is that we got the first shot over the bow 31 years ago. As a nation in 1948, we had no strategic interest in oil from the ME. However, people who would pump oil to post-Marshall plan Europe and England saw the benefit of pumping the stuff from the area and certainly, for them, it was on the agenda. Not my agenda. I'd rather see energy independence for the USA and that's what I wanted in 1973.
