I wish I had time to rebut (or agree in some cases) to your original post about your trip about India. I was somewhat pessimistic about India about 15 years ago. But with every single year that has passed - the cause for optimism increases day by day.

In India a sense of Nationalism (not necassarily driven by religion or caste) trumps any regional chauvinism. Chauvinists are cut down and brought to their place by their regional counterparts themselves. I see chauvinism particularly of southern red states (Freedom Fries anyone ?) more over here.

This is an increasingly confident nation and is much more competetive at present than I could ever imagine. The youth are bubbling with high energy and are eager to make their mark in fields other than traditional Maths and Science. I predict that in next 5 years they are going to do well in other areas that includes sports. India is a highly stratified country and you chose to look at wrong strata to come up with your own conclusions - which were pessimistic. Despite various fault lines, corruption and poor governance - the resiliency of the country primarily driven by it's people is being grossly underestimated.
