<the existence of allies is considered multi- lateral> If you are robbed by one man it is robbery. If you are robbed by ten men it is still robbery. If you are suddenly punched by a stranger in a restaurant it is assault. If you are punched by ten men it is assault. The usage of unilateral is with reference to being "one-sided" -- as in "the attack in the restaurant was unilateral". The concept of "multi-lateral" has no meaning in this context. If you are attacked by a gang, they will not appear in court and try to defend themselves by saying "but judge, it was a multilateral attack".
