Perhaps her story sent the popups away in a state of bewilderment?

I seem to have that effect on many people when I talk, too.

But they're very rude creatures, interrupting and blocking whatever I'm doing at the moment they appear

Ugh. that sounds annoying as hell. But, nope, never have seen anything like that. I do run a firewall on the Mac and there's a small icon shaped like a shield that flashes when my computer is under siege (which occurs more these days than it did when i first began using a firewall a couple of years ago). However, none of this seems to impair the computer much and I update my security programs frequently and scan for viruses pretty often.

Have you installed Service Pack 2 for XP?

You need to close the Windows Messenger Service that's part of XP. It's one way popups get into an XP machine. Gibson Research has a nifty program for doing that:

grc.com

BTW, out here we have DSL service for less than the cost of AOL. You ought to ditch AOL and get a DSL provider.
