[A new round of China-bashing in UK]--"China looms large as biggest threat"
By Christine Buckley
Our correspondent on why British industry fears it will not be able to compete against Eastern rivals
MOST manufacturers fear that China will be the biggest single threat to their competitiveness within the next five years.

The concern marks a sea-change in the way British industry views its major rivals and comes amid the boom in the Chinese economy over the past few years.

A survey of 500 leading engineering companies found that 57 per cent put China at the top of their lists of threats compared with 27 per cent two years ago and 18 per cent in 2001. Other regions viewed as big threats are Central and Eastern Europe and India.
