Set up polling booths, hand out pieces of paper with names on them and pencils, and voila -- democracy -- just add water and stir. We could democratize the whole world in a matter of months -- just send them boxes with slits on the top, pieces of paper to print names on, and lots of pencils. Perhaps next time we should not wait so long -- lets set up the boxes and take a vote while the next invasion is in full swing -- uranium depleted shells and ballots -- vote or die -- long live instant democracy. With so many countries lacking in this practice we should be able to keep a large military busy for a hundred years -- freeing the world at gunpoint. And if every country we invade descends into ungovernable hell on earth -- well, at least they will be "free". The lawlessness, the chaos, the sovereignty of the criminals, the free movement and recruiting of terrorists, the graves of the civilians -- all just part of the "hard work" of bringing the world democracy. If only any of this had anything to do with democracy, that would be nice.
