CHINA: 2-4% Textile Export Duties - Paper
20 Dec 2004

China could introduce export duties of between two and four per cent on six categories of textile products after quotas are lifted at the end of this year.

According to The Wall Street Journal, senior trade official Li Yueyin said the categories are likely to include items such as cotton and synthetic fibre shirts and underwear – two of the groups that the US is thinking of putting under safeguard restriction.

The Chinese government last week said it would place duties on textile exports when quotas expire. The move is in response to fears expressed by US and European trade groups that China will gain a monopoly over the textiles market when quotas end.
