< I did sense that the gap between the rich and poor is getting bigger.>

That idea amuses me. Since the poor are always at $0 and there's effectively no upper bound, people will spread across the continuum from $0 to $1billion or $10 billion or $1 trillion or whatever the current record holder has.

Most people will be clumped around the average pay rate with swarms spread up and down from that in a nice smooth curve.

The only way to make everyone equal is for everyone to be dead.

twmoore, tell us more about your visit in China. Although I have stayed in the US for a long time, I am still interested in listening to some honest opinion about China from Westerners<G>

gap between the rich and poor? I'm from a country with the sixth worse distribution of income in the world, I didn't learn the stuff in a book!! I suffered in my own flesh! I must be an authority.

The gap between the rich and poor it will always get bigger once there's economic development.

People are like the fingers of our hands, some are big, some are small, some are fatter some are thinner. Due to these differences, it is impossible for them to be equal, economically speaking.

But that can be equalized. It is NOT Sweden, Germany or France nor is social Darwinism. It is just common sense.

Before any country gets rich enough, there must be a way to share the little that there is to protect the weakest in society: like protecting maternity, help the guys without a leg or an arm, the ones who suffer from diseases and impairment and the elderly.

Once they get rich enough, and there is some wealth to be socilaized, then there should be some mechanism to equalize, like not taxing the stuff that those poorer segments consume. like butter, bread, soap, books, school items...

All that said, difference in earning capacity is difference in education. (This coming from a guy who dropped out in the third year of high school sound a bit shocking, but it is is).

It is not an army of PhDs that makes a country it is just normal people equipped with the right skills saleable in the market that does.
